Customer account setup
Add a return portal to Shopify customer accounts
Customers often look for a return beside the order they want to send back. Shopify can handle some returns natively, while an app can add exchanges, structured reasons, evidence, or a separate merchant workflow. Start with the smallest setup that covers the store's real needs.
Choose one of three entry points
| Entry point | Best when | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify native return | The merchant needs a standard return tied to an order. | No extra app is needed when native behavior is enough. |
| Opus order action | A customer should start a structured request beside a specific order. | The merchant must add the extension in the editor. |
| Opus portal link | The store wants one general Returns & Exchanges page in an account menu, FAQ, or account-page builder. | The customer chooses or verifies the order in the portal. |
Add the Opus order action
- Install Opus and save the store's basic return settings.
- Open Shopify's checkout and accounts editor.
- Add the Opus order action to the customer order menu.
- Save the customer-account configuration.
- Sign in as a test customer with a fulfilled order and open the action from that order.
Opus uses Shopify customer-account UI extensions for the order action, the order-specific request page, and return details. The customer stays inside Shopify's authenticated account experience.
Add a general portal link
Some account-page tools let a merchant add a custom menu item, tile, or page. Point that element to the store's own signed Opus proxy path, not to the Opus hosting domain:
https://YOUR-STORE.myshopify.com/apps/resolve
- Label it “Returns & Exchanges” or “Order help”
- Open it in the same tab unless the account tool requires otherwise
- Do not paste a Railway or internal application URL
- Keep Shopify's app proxy enabled
Test the customer path before publishing it
- Create a fulfilled test order for a customer account.
- Sign in as that customer in a private browser window.
- Open the order action and the general portal link.
- Confirm the correct order and eligible items appear.
- Submit a clearly marked test request.
- Confirm the request appears in Opus without exposing another order.
Do not install an app just to duplicate Shopify
Current Shopify customer accounts already let customers view and manage orders and can support self-serve returns. Opus is useful when the merchant needs a different request shape or operating workflow. If the native return action is sufficient, use it.
Platform details can change. Check Shopify's current customer account settings and the store's plan before publishing the workflow.
Free structured workflow
Give customers a clear return action beside their order.
Opus is built for smaller Shopify stores that want exchanges and structured return requests without paying for enterprise returns software. Every current feature is free.
