Small-store decision guide
Shopify self-serve returns and exchanges: native or app?
Shopify's built-in self-serve returns have become much more capable. Some stores should use them and install nothing. Other stores need customer-requested exchanges, no-sign-in guest access, or more control after a package comes back. Here is the practical difference.
What Shopify handles without another app
Shopify self-serve returns let signed-in customers request returns for delivered items and cancellations for unshipped items. The merchant receives the request in Shopify admin and decides whether to approve or decline it.
- Return windows based on delivery, including custom day counts
- Free shipping, a flat return-shipping fee, or customer-purchased labels
- Percentage restocking fees and final-sale exclusions
- Different return and cancellation rules by market
- Return reasons based on the product category
- Customer confirmation, approval, and decline notifications

Where the workflows differ
| Need | Shopify native | Dedicated app such as Opus |
|---|---|---|
| Refund return request | Yes | Yes |
| Cancellation request | Yes, for unshipped items | Not Opus's focus |
| Exchange requested by customer | No. Shopify states exchanges cannot be requested through native self-serve returns. | Yes, including variant and product selections |
| Customer access | Email and a six-digit verification code through Shopify customer accounts. Merchants can keep legacy storefront accounts and link customers to that experience. | Guest lookup with order number and checkout email, plus storefront and new customer-account entry points |
| Shipping-email entry | Merchant can link customers to the accounts page | Copyable return-and-exchange link for the shipping confirmation template |
| Photo evidence and follow-up details | Customer reason and note | Optional or required evidence and custom details |
| Inbound package workflow | Managed as part of the Shopify return | Tracking, receipt, inspection, and item disposition steps |
| Continuity and exports | Return records remain in Shopify | Request history exports to CSV; approved Shopify outcomes remain in Shopify |
| Cost | Included with Shopify | Varies by app; every current Opus feature is free |
Shopify documents that self-serve returns use customer-account sign-in and do not let customers request exchanges. Merchants can retain legacy storefront accounts while linking return customers to the customer-accounts experience. See Shopify's self-serve returns setup and customer-account feature comparison.
How to add exchanges to Shopify self-serve returns
Shopify separates the customer request from the merchant's resolution. Customers can submit a native return request, and a merchant can later add exchange items in Shopify admin, but the customer cannot request the exchange in the native self-serve form.
Option 1: stay native
Handle exchange choices manually.
- Activate Shopify self-serve returns.
- Tell customers to put the requested size or product in the return note, or contact your team separately.
- Review the request and add the exchange item from Shopify admin.
This costs nothing extra and works well when exchanges are rare enough for your team to confirm inventory and choices by hand.
Option 2: add Opus
Let the customer request the exchange.
- Give signed-in customers and guests a return-and-exchange entry point.
- Let them choose a new variant or a different product and explain the reason before submitting.
- Review the request, inspect the return when needed, and record the approved outcome in Shopify.
This is useful when sizing exchanges are common or when email threads are where exchange details get lost.
Shopify documents both sides of this distinction: exchanges cannot be requested in its self-serve flow, while merchants can add exchange items when they create a return in admin. See the current Shopify guides for self-serve setup and creating returns and exchanges.
Choose based on the process you actually run
Use Shopify native
You mainly approve refund returns.
- Customers are comfortable using an emailed code in Shopify customer accounts
- You do not need customers to request exchanges
- Basic reasons, notes, rules, and notifications are enough
- Your team can finish each return in Shopify admin
Consider an app
The return has a workflow of its own.
- Size or product exchanges are common
- You want order-number access without customer-account sign-in
- You need evidence or issue-specific follow-up questions
- You track the package before inspecting returned items
- You want a dedicated portal with visible customer access
Try the free option first
If native self-serve returns cover your requirements, activate them in Shopify admin under Settings → Customer accounts, then add the customer-accounts URL to your return policy, a returns page, or your footer. Test the full customer and merchant flow before publishing the link.
Follow Shopify's current setup instructions. If an exchange-first workflow is the missing piece, Opus is another free option rather than a reason to replace native functionality that already works.
Shopify returns and exchanges FAQ
Can customers request an exchange with Shopify self-serve returns?
No. Shopify's current documentation states that exchanges cannot be requested through self-serve returns. A merchant can still add exchange items while creating or processing a return in Shopify admin.
How can I add customer-requested exchanges to Shopify?
You can keep Shopify's native return flow and handle exchange requests manually, or add a dedicated exchange-request flow. Opus lets a customer select a variant or different product, then leaves the final approval and resolution with the merchant.
Do I need a returns app for Shopify?
Not always. Shopify native is a good fit when signed-in customers only need refund returns or cancellations. An app is useful when you need customer-requested exchanges, guest access, evidence collection, inbound tracking, or an inspection workflow.
For exchange-first small stores
Test Opus without adding another subscription.
Opus lets guests start with an order number and checkout email, lets customers request exchanges, and provides evidence collection, inbound tracking, inspection, CSV export, and Shopify-native outcomes. Every current feature is free.
